Antoine Haywood of People TV, Inc., on Media Justice and MAG-Net

This October, People TV, Inc., of Atlanta joined MAG-Net. Recently (albeit virtually) I was able to talk with Antoine Haywood, Director of Community Development about media justice, public access issues, and what media justice and MAG-Net offer to the Southeast.
Why did People TV decide to join MAG-Net?
People TV is the only the nonprofit organization in the city of Atlanta that provides public access to media production training, facilities and cable channel space for non-commercial content. During the past three years, People TV’s Department of Community Development has helped the organization make connections to local, regional and national organizations that advocate free speech, social justice, and giving underserved populations access to the arts, technology and human service resources. While building relationships in various communities and meeting MAG-Net members from other parts of the country, it has become clear that our mission and the direction in which People TV is growing is similar to other grassroots media organizations that are a part of the network. We believe there is a wealth of information to be learned from other members and the use of this information will play a vital role in our efforts to keep community media alive and healthy in Atlanta and the Southeast.
How did you first hear about MAG-Net?
I first learned about the network from MAG-Net members who attended the 2009 Rockwood Fellowship in Media, Communications and Information Policy.
What does media action mean to folks in the Southeast?
In the southeastern region, media action is seen when grassroots organizations and underprivileged individuals use media technology (primarily radio, television and internet) to inform the public about issues not addressed in mainstream media, mobilize groups to take action for the purposes of affecting social change, and create spaces for the exchange of community information.
What do you hope to gain by being part of MAG-Net?
We hope to share resources with other MAG-Net members in ways that will help us grow the work and increase the impact of social justice and grassroots media organizations in Atlanta and the southeastern region. Primary resources our organization would benefit from are training curriculum, toolkits that can be used to organize groups around campaigns, creative funding and partnership strategies that can be applied locally, and branding models that can connect local work to national campaigns.
What are you most excited about?
We want to help the presence of MAG-Net grow in the southeastern region, connect people in Atlanta and the region to work that is taking place on a national level, and share a perspective of what forms of media action work is needed and possible in our area.
We are anxious to build the types of partnerships that will help people gain a better understanding of the value of public access to media.
