5 Ways MAG-Net Was Presente at AMC

Just last week, members of the Media Action Grassroots Network (MAG-Net) gathered at the Allied Media Conference in Detroit, MI! We showed up big and are returning with new energy, connections, and plans to resist. Check out our recap below on 5 ways MAG-Net was presente at AMC:

1. Sharing and Holding Space at the MAG-Net Membership Assembly

MAG-Net held its annual Membership Assembly at AMC on June 15, 2017! This year’s Membership Assembly was the largest member convening we’ve ever held, with over 60 community leaders strategizing together to grow our movement for digital and media rights currently under threat. We’re still in awe at the overflowing love and collective strength in the room!

2. Connecting with media justice leaders and allies at #MEDIAJUSTICE Mixer co-hosted with Equality Labs and Free Press

With almost 100 people in attendance, our #MEDIAJUSTICE Mixer was a big success! We met new friends and allies who work, organize, and have an interest in digital security and media justice. Shout outs to our fabulous co-hosts Equality Labs and Free Press for helping to bring our communities together!

3. 20 MAG-Net Member Workshops

MAG-Net rolled deep and represented at AMC. Our members held powerful workshops on topics like fighting oppression through youth media, how to create a community-led business models, digital security tools, and healing from trauma. We loved seeing fellow members support one another in attendance at these sessions and were consistently amazed by the amount of knowledge and insight held within our network. To see a full list of AMC workshops by members like Generation Justice, WITNESS, and Stop LAPD Spying Coalition, go here!

4. Sustaining Hope in the Rebellion

For the first time ever, MAG-Net hosted a LIVE Media Justice Salon at the Allied Media Conference! Sustaining Hope in the Rebellion explored how to envision a hopeful future when it feels like everything is being taken from us. The Salon featured guest speakers Eleonore Wesserle of Line Break Media, Sage Crump of National Performance Network, and Alfredo Lopez of May First/People Link.

Here are a couple quotes from the Salon:

  • “At the age of 25, the joy was in the struggle itself…we believed in a free & socialist Puerto Rico but we never imagined it” – Alfredo Lopez
  • On the importance of dreaming for ourselves: “What we’re facing now, the world we’re living in now is somebody else’s imagination.” – Sage Crump

Watch Sustaining Hope in the Rebellion on Facebook Live to get a dose of their wisdom!

5. Building with AMC Attendees

If you attended AMC, you may have seen CMJ staff and fellow members spreading MAG-Net love at our table loaded with fact sheets on subjects like electronic monitoring and broadband privacy as well as stickers, tote bags, and our new “Net Neutrality is a Racial Justice Issue” water bottles. Remember: we can’t fight for our communities if we’re not hydrated!

Thank you for always showing up wholly and fully, and see ya next year!
