Appalshop and Center for Media Justice’s Malkia Cyril named as YBCA 100 Honorees

We’re excited to announce that MAG-Net member, Appalshop, and Center for Media Justice executive director, Malkia Cyril, have been chosen as Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) 100 honorees!

The YBCA 100 is an annual selection of the 100 people, organizations, and movements that inspire this innovative arts institution the most. It celebrates the creative leaders who are using their platform to shift
culture. This year’s honorees include
Moonlight director, Barry Jenkins; best-selling author, Roxane Gay; and musician, Chance the Rapper.

Appalshop, an Appalachia-based arts & media organization was chosen because they strengthen the voices, and celebrate the culture, of the people of Appalachia and rural America.

“As Appalshop approaches our 50th anniversary, we are honored to have our work recognized alongside such amazing artists and cultural workers across the country. Ones that are advocating for justice and building the communities where all people can live with respect,”  shared Ada Smith, Appalshop Board Chair.

Malkia Cyril, was selected as an honoree for their leadership in advocating for the defense of net neutrality and media justice.

Founded in 1993, YBCA is a key arts and cultural institution of San Francisco. YBCA uses culture as a tool for social change, and reimagines how an arts institution can impact the community it serves.

As an honoree, Malkia was invited to share the pressing questions that drive their work in San Francisco at the YBCA 100 Summit. Malkia will speak alongside honorees like Jill Soloway, writer and director of Transparent; Jose Antonio Vargas, journalist, filmmaker, and immigrant rights activist; and more.
