  • Broadband Adoption in Low-Income Communities

    The Social Science Research Council was commissioned by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to analyze the factors shaping low rates of adoption of home broadband services in low-income and other marginalized communities. The resulting study is one of the only large-scale qualitative investigations of barriers to adoption in the US, and complements recent FCC survey research on adoption designed to inform the 2010 National Broadband Plan. The study draws on some 170 interviews of non-adopters, community access providers, and other intermediaries conducted across the US in late 2009 and early 2010.     This study from the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism examined 34,000 news stories that appeared in major media outlets and found that most of what the public learns about Hispanics comes not through focused coverage of the life and times of this population group but through event-driven news stories in which Hispanics are one of many elements.

  • The Media Justice Fund's Field Report: Media Justice Through the Eyes of Local Organizers

    How do grassroots social justice organizers across the country define media justice? What telecommunications and media policy issues are they concerned about? How do they see the media justice movement intersecting with their communities? What are their outstanding communication needs? Using the depth and breadth of connections with local organizers available to the sixteen community-based funds of the Funding Exchange, the Media Justice Fund conducted interviews and workshops with over 100 grassroots organizers across the United States.
