The Position
The CENTER FOR MEDIA JUSTICE (CMJ), formerly the Youth Media Council (YMC), seeks a Development Strategist to lead foundation and grassroots fundraising, manage fundraising administration, donor relations and support organizational promotion. Competitive salary. Full medical, dental and vision benefits, substantial vacation package, optional HSA, and quarterly personal growth stipend provided. Position is in Oakland, CA. Who We Are
The Center for Media Justice (CMJ) is a media strategy and action center dedicated to building the power of historically disenfranchised communities to transform media debate and policy in the service of justice. We believe that media, art, and culture are critical tools for creating transformative social change- and that all people have the human right to communicate; Launched in response to the misrepresentation of youth and communities of color in the media, the CMJ is a communications center working to promote racial justice and defend human rights. CMJ works with youth organizing, racial justice, and other progressive groups in key U.S. regions to organize for media policy change, amplify the progressive voice in public debate, and transform the current media system into an inclusive public resource. Our diverse staff and long-term partnerships with grassroots organizations reflect our commitment to building a powerful intergenerational movement for change- led by historically disenfranchised communities.
Primary Responsibilities
The Youth Media Council is looking for an energetic, skilled and detail-oriented individual to join our diverse staff of seven people. 5-7 years of foundation and grassroots fundraising experience is required. Experience with foundation research and donor relations is desired. Primary areas of responsibility include:
Foundation & Grassroots Fundraising Management
• Lead development of organizational Fundraising Strategy, with Executive Director
• Lead all aspects of prospecting and grant writing, with Executive Director
• Lead grassroots fundraising and major donor campaigns
• Engage volunteers, board and staff in grassroots fundraising efforts, cultivate individual donors and coordinate direct mail appeals
• Manage proposal attachments, editing and mailing
• Lead report writing, editing and mailing
• Maintain fundraising database, files and calendar
• Develop and sustain communication with program officers
• Coordinate site visits and phone meetings
• Track CMJ’s progress toward its fundraising goals
• Participate in CMJ Management Team and report on FR efforts to staff
• Maintain working knowledge on current fundraising and communications practices in the non-profit/community organizing sector
• Liaison with fiscal sponsor’s Development Director
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is an excellent writer, highly organized, comfortable with big ideas, experienced in multiple aspects of social justice fundraising, with a passion for using and transforming media in the service of justice. People of color, women, and queer/trans folks are strongly encouraged to apply.
