“When we were developing our messaging we learned a few extremely critical lessons from working with the Center for Media Justice. They worked closely with us to create the most effective media tools and strategies.”
The training we received from CMJ provided critical support in developing our staff to better understand communications strategy and to create a plan that would advance our organizing work for greater impact. The training and technical assistance is helping us reshape our communications work, while grounded in the day to day reality of our base, organizing campaigns, and the transformative work we are trying to do in shifting values and vision.
CMJ offers critical expertise to help social justice groups re-frame their messages to support systemic transformation. The members of our network deeply valued CMJ’s incisive political analysis and interactive training methods. The cutting edge analysis and communications expertise they offered our members has been critical as we re-frame immigration issues for fundamental social justice reform.
The professionals at CMJ helped us to create a comprehensive communications plan that was linked with our organizing work from top to bottom. Rather than trying to squeeze our work into a cookie cutter messaging frame, or develop a plan without input from organizers, CMJ allowed us to stay true to our vision of change at SWOP while giving our organizers ownership of their own communications plan. Every detail of the communications plan reflects our core values and fills a role in moving the work forward, and we have CMJ to thank for that.
CMJ’s support of our work at the Community Justice Network for Youth (CJNY) has been an amazing resource. We utilize their media trainings to enhance our skills; their written materials to provide resources to our member groups; and we call upon the knowledge of their staff members when we need real-time media assistance. They are always available to help improve our work, and are an invaluable resource for the community.
Center for Media Justice has given us critical assistance and valuable tools to better understand the communications landscape. Through working with CMJ, ACE has been able to determine what internal communications practices we need to have in order to better spread our messages about environmental justice and community self determination. CMJ provides expertise that will help us to bring our work and frames to a broad audience so that more people can know and get involved with what we do.
The Center for Media Justice has helped POWER to shape our campaign messaging and strategy. CMJ staff worked with us to map the mainstream dialogue about gentrification and environmental health issues in Bayview Hunters Point. CMJ trained POWER leaders and organizers to develop our own narrative for these issues, grounded in the values and experiences of Black and Latino families in Bayview Hunters Point. I can think of countless moments when Karlos pushed up his sleeves to help us think through our toughest questions, rather than just providing limited tools. As a result of the insightful and dedicated support from CMJ, we have begun to shift this debate, and are winning positive news stories about the future of Bayview which put community health front and center.
